It's not exactly news, but now that Icky Thump has had a week to digest in the minds of global music lovers (at least those who resisted downloading the leaked version a couple weeks ago), this bizarre facet of White's character seems relevant again. I'm thinking of the tracks "300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues" and "Bone Broke" on Thump, which contain the lyrics:
"Well, there's three people in the mirror
And I'm wonderin' which one of them I should choose"
and
"God gave 7 minutes right to ya"
This made me nostalgic for Elephant's sexy, bluesy opus "Ball and a Biscuit," in which of course Jack famously croaks, "It's quite possible that I'm your third man, girl...But it's a fact that I'm the seventh son."Turns out Jack has quite the history with the number three (why the obsession with seven also, who knows). For the entireity of a 2005 tour, Jack changed his name to "Three Quid". Before the Stripes, Jack was the owner and manager of a small upholstery business called "Third Man Upholstery". He sometimes goes by the name "Jack White III" and his record label is called, naturally, Third Man Records.
What does it mean? What does it all add up to (besides 10, I guess)? Third Man has to be some kind of old school blues reference I'm supposed to get but don't. I guess Jack got me on this one.
edit: I forgot about the "Triple Inchophone" and the Stripes' 3" singles

I know this is like a yr old post but i still wanna share ^_^
jack white was born in a large family and he was the 7th son
and the number 3 come from the Upholstery business he own (when he was 16 or so) he notice how the fabrics were being hold by 3 staples all together and he just took it from there its also the reason why his amps have the number 3 in roman III to resemble the staples
i guess its no different than Jimmy Hendrix obsession with the number 9 not only did he add the number to songs tittles and lyrics ... he even took 9 pills when he die
hope this help if u still dint know
The Third Man is the name of an old black and white film.
The Third Man is an Orson Welles film (he starred in it, he didn't direct it), whom Jack White is a fan of (http://www.nerve.com/screeningroom/film/coffeeandcigarettes/). He wrote 'The Union Forever' using phrases from Citizen Kane, another Welles film (in which he directed and starred).
